Online company review Web site Glassdoor has announced the winners of its seventh annual Employee’s Choice Awards for the 50 best places to work in America.
Google came out on top.
“The benefits and care of employees is obviously world class, and compensation is almost unmatchable,” one employee of the tech giant wrote. “But the company attracts some of the best talent and best people to work with in the world, which is the most important bit.”
The rankings are based on a survey of employees taken between November of 2013 and 2014. Glassdoor uses the anonymous responses to questions about job satisfaction, work environment, company culture and senior leadership to determine the rankings. You can find the complete list here.
A few leading tech firms, Twitter and Facebook among them, fell out of the top five, while Google got top billing for the first time. (Twitter was No. 2 on last year’s list, but didn’t even make the top 50 this year.) Supporting work-life balance for employees with families was what tipped the scales in favor of the leading tech firm.

“Google employees in particular are talking about the company really stepping up in the past 12 months and making their lives easier in and out of work when it comes to how they work and function with their families,” Glassdoor career trends analyst Scott Dobroski told Forbes. Google gives employees who are new parents $500 in “baby bonding bucks.” When the company noticed the attrition rate of postpartum women was twice that of other employees, it increased maternity leave from three months to five, and offered full pay instead of partial pay.
The U.S. rankings are broken down into two categories. For companies with more than 1,000 employees, Google topped the list followed by the consulting firm Bain & Company, Nestle Purina PetCare, the tech firm F5 Networks and Boston Consulting Group.
The top five best small and medium companies to work for are: Motley Fool, a multimedia financial services company, software provider Fast Enterprises, healthcare IT and consulting firm Evolent Health, accounting software provider Intacct Corporation, and TubeMogul, a digital advertising software platform.
